Clawson Public Schools Arts Alive - March 20, 2010

This is an open invitation to Michigan music therapists to attend Clawson Public Schools Arts Alive event on Saturday March 20, 2010. The programs will begin at 9AM and will run up until 1 PM.

Arts Alive 2010 will be the fourth consecutive year of a collaborative effort between the Clawson Fine Arts Team and the Clawson Autism program to sponsor a Saturday morning event where families can come experience the arts first hand. This year the theme is "Home Is Where The Heart Is."

The morning will begin at 9:30 AM with performances by the orchestra and choirs. Under the direction of Tavia DiSalvio and Nick Kule these ensembles will provide the kick off for the event. Following these performances families will have an opportunity to view artwork from all grades. There will be a caricature artist and other hands on art activities. One highlight of this year's festival is the "Empty Bowls Project." Students at all levels have been creating clay soup bowls which will be for sale for $10.00. The proceeds from the sale will go to Forgotten Harvest. Soup will be served and there will be an opportunity to paint some of the bowls. This program was a collaborative effort involving high school art teacher Megan Homanick and Zoe Miller, certified occupational therapy assistant who wrote the grant awarded by the Autism Society of Oakland County that funded the materials for this project.

Another anticipated event in this year's Arts Alive will be a family concert sponsored byThe Starfish Project. The Starfish Project is facilitated by art educators Terri Havers and Eileen Toro and music therapist Lisa Barnett. This creative arts group is designed to help students with Autism and their peers in general education develop social skills. Students have been learning music composed by the "Swingset Mamas" who will perform at 10:45 AM in the Clawson High School library. The students will sing along with Marlowe Bechmann and Lizzie Swan and will display their artwork and special creations from these classes.

For more information about the Swingset Mamas go to:
www.swingsetmamas.com

The Clawson Fine Arts Team encourages you to pass this information along.
This is a free event and it is open to the public.

Thanks so much.

The Arc of Oakland County's 2010 Michigan Performing Arts Talent Show

Dear Michigan Music Therapists:

Here is a special request to you from Allison Murowany, Program Coordinator for The Arc of Oakland County’s 2010 Michigan Performing Arts Talent Show. There is also attached information to this email.

Every spring, The Arc of Oakland County holds a state-wide, non-competitive, performing arts talent show at the Birmingham Community House in downtown Birmingham. The 2010 Michigan Performing Arts Talent Show is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

Open to all performing artists with a developmental disability/cognitive impairment and/or mental retardation, each participant is able to showcase their talents and abilities before a live audience on a professional stage. Each performer receives a t-shirt and a participant ribbon that day.

All areas of performance that would normally be considered as a performing art are welcome to participate. That would include, but is not limited to: ensembles and solos in instrumental and vocal music, dance, baton, and puppetry.

We also encourage students with disabilities that perform as part of an inclusive group/ensemble, to participate with that group for the program. One example is Lisa Barnett’s student, Lance Vardon, playing with the high school orchestra where he attends classes.

I would be happy to send you, and anyone else interested in having their students participate, copies of past programs, and the 2009 newsletter which highlighted the program as an FYI.

The formal application will be sent out in February of 2010 and is due back into The Arc office at the end of March. The attached is a copy of that application which can also be used to apply for the program.

If you would like to receive the application in February or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at 248.816.1900 or, by email at: amurowany@thearcoakland.org.

Thanks in advance and I hope you can join us for the program in May.
