Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp - Call for Volunteers

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp

A camp that provides life-changing opportunities for musical expression, movement, performance and social interaction for all people with special needs and their siblings in a welcoming summer camp setting focused on ability and inclusion.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!
Camp Dates: June 17th-19th, 2010

We have a WONDERFUL and huge event coming up this summer--the 8th Annual Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp. For those of you who have not yet been involved in the camp, it is a fun-filled, music-filled 3-day event honoring the life of Eric Winter and celebrating the ABILITIES that as people, everyone has! Cindy Edgerton, the camp dean, met Eric about 13 years ago when he enrolled in music therapy. He was one outstanding individual who loved music and made great strides in his music therapy sessions! Unfortunately, Eric passed away in 2003.

Because of his great love for and enjoyment of music, as well as the incredible dedication of his parents, Dick and Judy Winter, this music therapy camp became a reality.

This year, it will be held June 17th, 18th and 19th from 8:30-3:30 at the Timberlane campus of Michigan State University's Community Music School. We already have camp staff, who will be running the groups, but there are many other important people needed, who help make this camp successful as volunteers!

We need many volunteers to help in the group settings. There will be 7 music therapy camp groups, all divided according to age (adult groups, adolescent groups and children groups). These groups need MANY volunteers to help them run smoothly. As a volunteer, you need to be energetic and positive throughout the entire day, which isn't always easy!! You do not have to plan anything or have any music knowledge or skill – leave that to the music therapists! J Basically, as a volunteer, you have to help the individuals experience success in the activity that the music therapist is implementing. Also, as a volunteer, you may be taking children to the individual sessions, to the bathroom, to the "down-time" room and possibly helping individuals who just need a break from the group session.

Priority will be given to individuals who are able to volunteer all 3-days, but please let us know if you only have a few dates available because we have many volunteer positions to fill! Attached to this email are two forms. One is the volunteer application which needs to be sent back to Jaime Merritt as soon as possible. The other form is a background check which needs to be sent back to the Office of Rick Management (see form for information). Every individual who is planning on volunteering for the 2010 Eric ‘RicStar’ Music Therapy Camp MUST fill out both forms. If you are a returning volunteer, past forms do not apply, so please fill out the 2010 forms.

If you are interested in volunteering but are from out of town, do not worry! We have a few options open for volunteers in need of housing – please specify that in an email to Jaime.

Michigan State University has offered the dorm Mason/Abbott for both campers and volunteers from out of town. The cost will be approximately $150.00 and includes both Thursday and Friday night housing as well as a box lunch every day provided. On occasion music therapy students from MSU will offer housing as well to students from other schools. Let Jaime know if you are looking at doing the housing option, as there is a deadline for the dorm housing at MSU of May 2010.

Email Jaime Merritt at merrit33@msu.edu with the forms and with any questions about volunteering. Please let her know the exact days that you will be able to be there. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn more about music therapy and to gain experience in interacting with children and adults with and without special needs. If you already talked to Jaime about volunteering, please fill out the attached volunteer application and send it to her anyways. She needs to form her volunteer list so she can begin organizing all of the WONDERFUL volunteers!!!!

THANKS!
Jaime Merritt

Clawson Public Schools Arts Alive - March 20, 2010

This is an open invitation to Michigan music therapists to attend Clawson Public Schools Arts Alive event on Saturday March 20, 2010. The programs will begin at 9AM and will run up until 1 PM.

Arts Alive 2010 will be the fourth consecutive year of a collaborative effort between the Clawson Fine Arts Team and the Clawson Autism program to sponsor a Saturday morning event where families can come experience the arts first hand. This year the theme is "Home Is Where The Heart Is."

The morning will begin at 9:30 AM with performances by the orchestra and choirs. Under the direction of Tavia DiSalvio and Nick Kule these ensembles will provide the kick off for the event. Following these performances families will have an opportunity to view artwork from all grades. There will be a caricature artist and other hands on art activities. One highlight of this year's festival is the "Empty Bowls Project." Students at all levels have been creating clay soup bowls which will be for sale for $10.00. The proceeds from the sale will go to Forgotten Harvest. Soup will be served and there will be an opportunity to paint some of the bowls. This program was a collaborative effort involving high school art teacher Megan Homanick and Zoe Miller, certified occupational therapy assistant who wrote the grant awarded by the Autism Society of Oakland County that funded the materials for this project.

Another anticipated event in this year's Arts Alive will be a family concert sponsored byThe Starfish Project. The Starfish Project is facilitated by art educators Terri Havers and Eileen Toro and music therapist Lisa Barnett. This creative arts group is designed to help students with Autism and their peers in general education develop social skills. Students have been learning music composed by the "Swingset Mamas" who will perform at 10:45 AM in the Clawson High School library. The students will sing along with Marlowe Bechmann and Lizzie Swan and will display their artwork and special creations from these classes.

For more information about the Swingset Mamas go to:
www.swingsetmamas.com

The Clawson Fine Arts Team encourages you to pass this information along.
This is a free event and it is open to the public.
