Michigan Music Therapy Election Bios

Below are the bios for the 2020 MMT Executive Board elections. Please read the bios for the following positions before casting your vote: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

 

President: Alisha Snyder

Alisha Snyder, MM, MT-BC, graduated from Calvin College in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in music. She did her music therapy equivalency and masters at Western Michigan University. After her internship at the Franciscan Life Process Center (FLPC) in Lowell, MI, she worked at the FLPC until 2015. While she does not currently work with clients, she stays connected to the world of music therapy through attending conferences and serving on various music therapy boards, first as the Membership Chair of MMT, and now as President. She is also a member of the Michigan Music Therapy Task Force, working towards state recognition of music therapy. In addition to her work on music therapy boards, Alisha has been President of Piano Teachers’ Forum of Grand Rapids, Editor for the Michigan Music Teacher Association newsletter, President of Grand Rapids Musicians’ League, and Third Vice President of Michigan Federation of Music Clubs. She is excited to continue serving as President of Michigan Music Therapists.

 

Vice-President: Roberta (Bobbi) Justice

Roberta W. Justice, MM, MT-BC, FAMI has over forty years of clinical experience in inpatient, outpatient and partial hospital mental health programs, nursing facilities, community programs and special education settings. Since 1999, Professor Justice has taught in the Music therapy program at Eastern Michigan University as a Part-time Lecturer Faculty. Justice has expertise and training in a variety of music, art and dance therapy techniques; a strong history of coordinating conferences and workshops, and providing in-service training and leading personal growth workshops for other professionals, including the use of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. She has forty years as successful clinical training supervisor in music therapy on both undergraduate and graduate levels; ten years on the Editorial Board for Music Therapy Perspectives, a professional music therapy journal, serves as the newsletter editor for the Association of Music and imagery, and 18 years as the clinical training chair for Michigan Music Therapists. She has given numerous presentations on the use of music and music therapy in a variety of areas, has articles published in several national and international journals, and chapters in several books.

 

Secretary: Emily Smith

Emily Smith, MEd, MT-BC, is a vocal instructor and music therapist serving the greater Grand Rapids area.  A native of Roanoke Virginia, Emily earned her degree and board certification in music therapy from Appalachian State University.  The bulk of her clinical work is in end-of-life care and she currently co-owns West Michigan Music Therapy, LLC. Emily maintains a private studio in addition to teaching applied voice and aural comprehension at GRCC. Additionally, Emily enjoys an active performance schedule that includes collaboration in local worship spaces, music for special events, & symphonies.   Emily enjoys community outreach through facilitating music workshops and guest lectures around west Michigan.

 

Treasurer: Pam Buchkowski

Pamela Buchkowski, MT-BC has been a music therapist for 15 years.  While not currently practicing, Pam has stayed active in the music therapy profession by training other MT’s at Elara Caring Hospice, and being the MMT treasurer for the past 2 years.  She was also on the 2018 GLR conference committee. Since taking over as treasurer, she has had the MMT 501(c)(3) status reinstated, and set up PayPal for MMT membership dues, making it much more convenient to join! She would like to continue serving as treasurer for the next 2 year term and get other MT’s involved in the Michigan Music Therapy Association!
